Betty Newman Sculpture, Dublin
This monument, in Lower Exchange Street, is a metal representation of the ribs of a Viking ship. This is a sculpture by Betty Newman-Maguire installed in 1988 and represents the skeleton of a beached Viking ship.
From the 9th century, waves of Viking raiders invaded Ireland and plundered Irish monasteries and towns and were only shifted by the arrival of the Normans in 1170.
It is believed that Vikings beached and often burned one of their ships to display their intention of settling permanently at a place they had arrived in.
