Bushy Park, Dublin
Bushy Park is a large suburban public park in Terenure, Dublin.
Many local sports clubs and schools use the park for recreational activities. It has football fields, a skateboarding area and 11 tennis courts. There is a children's playground, a woodland walk, and a duck pond.
The park originated in 1700 when Arthur Bushe of Co. Kilkenny, Secretary to the Revenue Commissioners, built "Bushes House" on 4 hectare site. In 1772 John Hobson became the owner and changed the name of the house to Bushy Park. in 1791 the third owner, Abraham Wilkinson added almost 40 extra hectares to this estate when his daughter Maria married Robert Shaw, first baronet, Member of Parliament and Lord Mayor of Dublin and gave the house and estate as a dowry to the couple in 1796.
The Shaw family was connected with Bushy Park for over 150 years until they sold the house and grounds to Dublin City Council in 1953. The house and eight hectares of the grounds were sold in 1955 by Dublin City Council to the Religious of Christian Education, where they established Our Lady's School for girls. Dublin City Council later re-acquired 2 acres of woodland in 1992.
The park is noted for its beautiful woodland walks, ornamental ponds and beautiful river Dodder Walk as well as accommodating football, tennis boules, and a children's playground. Dublin City’s first public skatepark was opened in 2006 in the park consisting of a concrete bowl surrounded with a number of street elements.
