Dalkey Castle & Heritage Centre, Ireland
Dalkey Castle & Heritage Centre is situated in the 14th Century Castle in Dalkey town centre. Dalkey was founded as a Viking settlement and became an important port during the Middle Ages. It is allegedly one of the points through which the plague entered Ireland in the mid-14th century.
The Living History tour at Dalkey Castle (originally knowns as Goat's Castle) is a live performance every half hour by Deilg Inis Living History Theatre Company. The actors play their parts and stay in character what ever the circumstances. The conceit is that the characters all work in Goat Castle (as Dalkey Castle was called then) in the 1500s and 1600s. They vividly describe their work and their daily lives to enlighten and entertain thier visitors. The Tour also takes in St Begnet's Church and graveyard located next to the castle.
Walking tours of Dalkey are also available during which an experienced guide reveals the stories behind Dalkey's streetscape and ancient history.
Pre booked guided literary walks to settings in the work of James Joyce, George Bernard Shaw, Flann O’Brien and Hugh Leonard are also available.
