Findlaters Church, Dublin
The striking Gothic Revival Findlater's Church in Parnell Square was erected in the 1860s by Alexander Findlater, founder of the wine merchant firm, at his own expense, and presented to the Presbyterian congregation. The church is often mistakenly referred to as St. Findlater's Church.
Presbyterians were prominent in Dublin as early as 1594 with the appointment of Rev. William Travers, a Presbyterian clergyman, as the first regular Provost of Trinity College.
In the 1860s the growth of the congregation and a substantial increase in rent on the Mary's Abbey property caused the congregation to seek new premises. Alexander Findlater, a Dublin merchant, bought the present site in Rutland Square (now Parnell Square) and had a church erected at a cost of £14,000. The church was built and decorated in Gothic style from granite brought in from Dalkey, with dressings of Portland stone. The building is popularly known as 'Findlater's Church' and is referred to by that name in two of James Joyce's novels. The opening services were held in November, 1864.
There is an archive of Church records dating from 18th century
