Howth Harbour, Ireland
Originally just a small, picturesque fishing village, Howth with its surrounding rural district is now a busy suburb of Dublin, with a mix of dense residential development and wild hillside, all on the rugged peninsula of Howth Head. Howth is also home to one of the oldest occupied buildings in Ireland, Howth Castle.
The island of Ireland's Eye, part of the Howth Estate, and of the Special Area of Conservation, lies about a kilometre north of Howth harbour, with Lambay Island some 5 km further to the north.
Howth is a favourite holiday destination and benefits especially from its popularity amongst yachtsmen and pleasure boaters. Howth Yacht club dates back to 1895 and is by far the largest in the country and enjoys a busy programme of racing, regattas and voyaging.
Away from the harbour itself there is much to recommend Howth. Historians will love the ruined abbey, nearby Baily Lighthouse and 15th Century castle. You can take a bracing stroll along the piers, sightsee aboard an open top tram, watch seals and dolphins in the waters along the shore and take in breathtaking views from cliff top walks. Howth’s working fishing port means that fish and seafood restaurants are in abundance.
