Isolde's Tower, Dublin

In Wood Quay, Dublin, in 1993, when digging out the foundations for the new apartment block above, the archaeologists found the substantial lower sections of this massive 13th Century tower. This tower was first discovered in the 17th century but most of it was destroyed and covered in. The walls are 4m thick and the tower rose to a height of three storeys. This tower had to be strong as it would be the first part of the defences to face a determined sea-borne attack.

The foundations of the city wall can still be seen continuing from two sides of the tower and it is believed that almost all of foundations from the complete circuit of the walls still exist underground. Indeed some sections of old wall can be seen above ground.

On darker days it can be difficult to see down to the level of the old tower but there is a conservation plan to upgrade the presentation of the tower which will include lighting, pictorial descriptions of its history and ongoing maintenance and cleaning.
