Iveagh Gardens, Dublin 2
The Iveagh Gardens, designed by Ninian Niven, in 1865, are among the finest and least known of Dublin's parks and gardens. The design is across between the 'French Formal' and the 'English Landscape' styles and display landscape features including Rustic Grotto's and Cascade, sunken formal panels of lawn with Fountain Centre Pieces, Wilderness, Woodlands, Maze, Rosarium, American Garden, Archery Grounds, Rockeries and Rooteries.
Also in the gardens is a life-sized bronze statue of McCormack, by sculptor Elizabeth O'Kane. John Count McCormack (1884 – 1945), was a world-famous Irish tenor singer, celebrated for his performances of the operatic and popular song repertoires, and renowned for his diction and breath control.
In the early 19th century the gardens were opened to the public and were called the Coburg Gardens, after the royal family of Saxe-Coburg. But by 1860 they had fallen into disrepair. They were restored by Benjamin Guinness. His son Edward, the first Earl of Iveagh, gave the gardens to the newly-chartered University College Dublin in 1908. They were renamed the Iveagh Gardens as a mark of gratitude.
Further restoration of the Gardens began in 1995 and to date most of the features have been restored.
